This academy was started In 1980, by the famous violinist, Koji Toyoda as music director, and Kazuyuki Toyama as general manager. Since then, we keep running this two weeks academy in August. We invite world famous players in accordance with the theme for each year. We had learned from various festivals such as Nice in France, Siena in Italy, Salzburg in Austria or Aspen and Marlboro in the USA and established our own style in Kusatsu.

From the begining, many world famous players got together for this festival. And they look highly of this festival, as it is an honour to be invited to this festival.

We try to make the environment where both professors and students communicate mutually. Students will get learn, raize friendship, find meaning to pursue music. Lessons tend to spend more time to ensemble on the top of technical improvement.
From 11th festival, in 1990, Kazuyuki Toyama became a music director, and he emphasizes chember music lesson further.

Kusatsu Academy started the first full scale music academy in Japan. Since we have many great players, it is too disappointing not to have concerts. And it will be a great opportunity for student to see their professors play on the stage. For those reasons, we have both 'academy' and 'festival' as one. There are many ex-academy students who became professonal musicians and played on concerts in this festival. They are very good role model for current students.

Till 1990, the concerts were held in Tenguyama rest house which is the restaurant during the winter ski season. In 1991, the Kusatsu Concert Hall completed with 608 seats. Mr. Junzo Yoshimura designed this hall as one floor sytle, took big window in front of the hall to see fresh greens. You will enjoy fresh air in Kusatsu as well as great music. They introduced the Italian organ in 2002 which increased the variety of music played.
